April S. White was born on the Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii). When she needs to 'feel at home' for rejuvenation and inspiration, she has another home on Haida Gwaii in Massett just on the northern tip of these beautiful but rugged islands. She’s really able to re-infuse herself with the power that comes from her Haida culture. This small group of islands has produced more talented artists than anywhere else in Canada. When she’s creating art, she experiences innate memories that deeply connect her to her cultural past. In Haida Gwaii, art is a life time and isn't a past time. In 1792, Captain Vancouver George reported seeing many enormous wooden human statues in this area. Creating art is everything for her - her inspiration and life. She invites viewers to take time and enjoy their visit with her and her art. Words are not enough to describe her works of art. Just a glimpse of what April imagines, and the legends and myths of her people, live forever in her art. It's as if not her eyes, but only her brain is really doing the seeing. She feels this cerebral vision as being supernatural and magical. April has several relatives living in these islands and all of them practice indigenous art -- sculpting, painting, carving masks using spruce root and cedar bark in weaving, totem poles, steaming bentwood boxes, jewelry making, and creating art out of the unique stones in the islands, Argillite. Early in her career, April honed her skill in painting and refined her abilities while she was practicing geology. In the 1980s, April made the decision to put down her geology work, and picked up her paint brushes for good. Framed April S. White art are found in many galleries around the world.
