Alfred R. Waud (Born 1828) was born in Britain but later immigrated to the United States. He mostly captured the scenes of war and after the war; he continued to contribute sketches documenting American life. These he contributed to Harper’s company and they depicted scenes in locales such as the South in the Reconstruction era and the western frontier. He worked mainly as a freelance illustrator, and managed to contribute art to a number of publications, including the esteemed, plentifully illustrated Picturesque America which was edited by Cullen William Bryant. He was an illustrator and he died in 1891 in Marietta, Georgia aged 62. His detailed and lively sketches of scenes from the Civil War captured the dramatic intensity of the war and furnished him with a reputation as one of the leading artist-journalists of his time. Today, his art is mainly availed in the form of ready to hang framed Alfred R. Waud art which are very popular with many clients and collectors because they come with all the accessories needed for hanging. Waud’s art is also availed in many leading online stores. At the age of 32, he joined the New York Illustrated News became as a staff working in the illustration department. Upon the beginning of civil war in 1861, he was sent off to cover the Army of the Potomac. This was the leading Union military contingent. The artist remained with the army after he joined the staff of Weekly magazine by Harper at the end of 1861.
