Hank Walker (1919 – 1995) grew up in “JOPPA,” the tidewater section of Newburyport Ma. As a young child he witnessed the last of the market hunters and tagged along on many occasions. These experiences made him try to join Admiral Byrd on his South Pole expedition in 1930 but the Admiral laughed at him for his youth, but always remembered him for his enthusiasm to learn. This finally paid off, for in 1937 he was picked to go to the MacGregor-Goodale Arctic expedition. Walker was credited with saving the mapping party while they where trapped for twelve days in an Arctic blizzard. In 1939, he joined Ducks Unlimited and started his life path as a benefactor, an artist and a conservationist. His works of art and decoys have raised over $4 Million for many conservation projects. In December of 1941, Walker joined the Air Force where he served until 1953 after the Korean conflict. In 1978 Walker retired from the State Legislation and therefore had enough time to devote his life to environmental marsh issues wildlife and art work; through his art he raised money and awareness for the value of the marsh land. He got many awards for his art work and out door and environmental writings. For more than 5 decades Walker sat in the tidal marshes and painted what he saw. Framed Hank Walkers Art can be found in private collections and museums thought out North America in almost every medium, including pen & ink, oil, and watercolor.
