Sandy Wadlington (born in October, 1951) grew up in Westwood, a suburb of Boston. She loved art from a young age but it was not until she reached the 5th grade that she began to take seriously the idea of becoming an artist. She was inspired by the legacy of her great-great-great grandfather, Alvan Fisher, an artist in the first half of the 19th century. Sandy later studied at the Massachusetts College of Art and the Museum of fine Arts in Boston. She married and moved to San Antonio, Texas and later to the West Coast but returned to establish a studio in rural New Hampshire and received her BFA in Painting in 1989. During this time there was social and political change and the world of art was also not spared. Drawing pictures of trees and farms was not encouraged and so Sandy wasn’t sure what direction to take. She took some time off from art school to gain some experience that could enable her earn some money. However, she continued to read art books and to visit museums and galleries. She also continued to draw and paint but only on a casual basis. She got a job in the Production Department of the Institute of Texan Cultures, a museum dedicated to publishing, exhibits and research on different ethnic groups making up the population of Texas. Sandy ran the silkscreen shop and graphic darkroom, and did some design and illustration. Sandy later decided to open her own studio where she did landscapes and worked primarily in pastel. Framed Sandy Wadlington art can be found in many institutions all over the world.
