René Vincent (Born 1879) was a fanatic of automobiles and preceded Geo Ham as the automobile poster artist of his time. He sometimes signed his work using Rageot. Little is known of his personal life, though initially he was well known for his fashion illustrations. This French illustrator worked in an Art Deco style and became well known for his poster designs. He also excelled in creating gracefully designed poster advertisements for beverages, fashion, and other products. Vincent influenced many other poster designers who followed in his footsteps in designing automotive posters. As an illustrator, he became much in demand for his poster designs that depicted the first generations of racecars and automobiles, including Salmson, Peugeot, Bugatti, and other car makers. His art also depicted suppliers of automotive parts and supplies, including Shell and Michelin. Vincent really loved cars, and he became the first French citizen to have a driver's license and was also one of the first Parisians to have a garage built onto his house. Today, his works still stand out among the works of other artists, and in most cases they are the center of attraction wherever they are hanged.
