William Vanscoy (Born 1946) is an American photographer born in San Mateo, California. Even though he started taking pictures as a hobby, he fast realized the artistic value of his images and soon took a strong path towards strengthening his photography skills and knowledge. He went to Santa Barbara-based Brooks Institute of Photography between 1976 and 1979, from where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree. After completing his studies at the school, Vanscoy traveled to Los Angeles and established his own professional photography studio. He worked there commercially for more than 20 years, but also spared time to create his own art by visiting places in the American Southwest and European countries, taking pictures of landscapes. He got his inspiration from a number of photographers, including W. Eugene Smith and Paul Strand. At some point in his career, he acquired a Large Format View type camera. That became another milestone and an inspiration towards documenting the wonderful works of nature delivered in landscapes. Vanscoy’s ideas were influenced by the great works of artists such as Edward Weston and Ansel Adams.
In 2002, he felt that he already had enough of commercial photography, so he decided to close down his studio completely. He then moved from Los Angeles to Southern Coast of Oregon where he continued creating his own artwork. Vanscoy makes his art using digitally captured images that he enhances using digital means to get the desired results. There are also times he combines more than one image to deliver a single piece. Vanscoy says that his photographic works are fundamentally for expressing peace and great things that define his life. His works are displayed in several collections, with numerous framed William Vanscoy art pieces also selling through galleries across the US.
