Paolo Uccello (1397 – 1475) was born in Pratovecchio. At the age of 27, he was already earning his own living as a painter. Around that time he painted several pieces that became best-sellers. Uccello was an Italian mathematician and painter who was noted for his pioneering work on visual perspective in art. He loved art from his childhood and the name Uccello came from his love for painting birds. As he succeeded in painting trees in their natural colors, he was also able to paint in a lively manner a large number of animals. He began to acquire a reputation for painting landscapes in contrast with many of his predecessors. He continued with scenes from the story of Noah's Ark, the Deluge, Noah's drunkenness and Noah's sacrifice. These scenes brought him great fame in Florence. He was obsessed by his interest in perspective and would spend several hours staying late in the night in his study trying to grasp the exact vanishing point. He produced high quality pieces of art because at the age of 10 he had apprenticed to Ghiberti Lorenzo, the famous sculptor and designer of the doors of the Florence Baptistery. Ghiberti’s sculptural composition and narrative, late-Gothic style greatly influenced Uccello. Uccello began his lifelong friendship with Donatello around this time. In 1414 he was admitted to a professional painters' guild and just one year later, he joined the official painter's guild of Florence. The framed Paolo Uccello art still amaze many collectors to date. They have found their way into many galleries and collections around the world.
