Elizabeth Twining (Born 1805) was born and raised in London. She was born into tea merchant family, and was one of the 9 children of Elizabeth Mary Smythies and her husband Richard Twining. Raised in a privileged family and area, Elizabeth learned drawing and art as part of her education. She was inspired by The Botanical Magazine by Curtis and by the Royal Horticultural Society. She began drawing flowers and plants at a tender age; she practiced by making rough sketches from artwork found in the Dulwich Picture Gallery. She also toured famous museums under the patronage of her father. She illustrated and wrote a number of books on the subject of plant, most prominent is the “Illustrations of the Natural Order of Plants” which was in two volumes. Volume I was produced in 1849 while volume II was produced in 1855). They included royal folio, close to 200 hand-colored lithographs. These were based on her observation at Lexden Park in Colchester and at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew. Elizabeth lived in Twickenham in an old family residence of Dial House. She died at the age of 84, and by her will, her house was given to the faithful in Twickenham for them to use it as the vicarage. Her original artwork is now mostly part of the collection of the British Museum. She was an elder sister of Louisa Twining, who was a social reformer. Today, framed Elizabeth Twining art adorn the walls of many buildings in London and beyond.
