John Trumbull (June 6, 1756 – November 10, 1843) was a respected American artist known widely for his paintings that documents the American Revolution. He studied at Harvard School, graduating in 1773, after which he worked as a teacher. By 1784, Trumbull traveled to London and studied with Benjamin West, a renowned painter. It's West who encouraged him to begin making his historical paintings that became widely acclaimed and have remained important records of notable historical events. He created the series throughout his painting life, making them sporadically whenever he felt like creating art. Trumbull went back to the U.S. and then back to London in 1794 where he worked for Jay Treaty as his secretary. He later married an amateur painter, Hope Harvey. Trumbull didn't quite settle in one place, traveling between the U.S. and England. His attempt in England in 1808 to go into portrait painting failed and he opted not to explore the field any further. Trumbull’s later efforts to run a studio in New York City were also unsuccessful, but he still continued to create paintings, adding to his understanding and skills. It was in 1817 that the U.S. Congress commissioned him to create four large artwork pieces, which he did and completed in 1824. He would later donate some of his best artwork pieces to Trumbull Gallery that was established by Yale Professor Benjamin Silliman in 1831. He negotiated for an annuity in exchange for the artwork pieces that he donated. Framed John Trumbull art have been widely sold and are preferred by those who want ready to mount artwork.
