Konan Tanigami (Born 1879) was born in Hyogo region. He managed to achieve high status in the arts industry due to his dedication and passion for the arts. He was open to learning new techniques and styles and was a loyal visitor to art galleries and museums from where he learned from the works of other artists. Tanigami was the first artist in Japan to paint Western flowers and is renowned for his true-to-life, vivid painting of flowers. He’s a renowned Kacho-e (flowers and birds) Nihon-ga artist. Tanigami liked to read art books and the history of the artists that he admired. His efforts paid off and received many awards. Tanigami produced 5 volumes of images of Western plants which were published in 1917/18 by Unsodo circa. The series depict exotic plants and lush flowers in full bloom and organized as a visual record of garden flowers. Tanigami was inspired by vibrant and vivid colors. His preferred medium was photography. He said he liked photography because it lends itself to vitality. He had the good fortune to live in some fine-looking parts of Hyogo region where framed Konan Tanigami art was highly appreciated. He also produced 2 other volumes which each devoted to the summer and spring seasons. His fifth volume was a combination of the plants and flowers that flourished in the winter autumn and seasons. His work has been recognized by many awards. They continue to attract many people, art students, art teachers and the general public included – more so because of the quality and the choice of subject matter.
