Eric Sweet’s approach to using watercolors is quite interpretive in nature. His paintings always take into consideration his spiritual connection to animals. They reference the spirit of the animals, and not necessarily their true appearance. Eric’s paintings are created spontaneously and very loosely, they are brought to life very quickly with lots of interpretation and movement; he keeps the paintings light but energetic. Eric generally works in several layers of washes and this allows him to get deep shadows and smooth gradations. Sprays are also signature in his works. He uses this technique for two important reasons. The first and the most important is that he finds that the nature of sprays is symbolic of the spirit and soul he’s connecting with. Eric believes that the animal spirit is not tangible and not in complete form but rather abstract and elusive. The second reason is that he finds the inborn expressiveness of making sprays, the act itself, he says, is emotionally liberating and it feels really good. When he looks into an animal’s eyes, whether it’s an elephant, squirrel, or a bird, he feels the universe, and knows he’s connected to something greater than he can comprehend. All of his paintings are created in a manner that allows him to focus in on the particular relationship he has with the animal spirit.
