Friedrich Sustris (Born 1540) was a draughtsman, painter, designer and architect, son of Lambert Sustris. Records show that he must have been in Rome in 1560 and most probably in Florence from 1563 to 1567, where worked on Michelangelo's catafalque under the direction of Vasari and also participated in the decoration of the Palazzo Vecchio. Sustris was presumably first taught by his father. In the following year he drew cartoons for Grand Duke Cosimo de' Medici's tapestry works and became a member of the Accademia del Disegno. His first principal was Hans Fugger who ordered the decoration of the Fugger mansion in Venice. And from 1573 he worked for Duke of Bavaria, William V, in Landshut. With William's accession to the throne in 1579 he became chief architect to the Bavarian court. Though Sustris never saw the Netherlands, his heritage was Dutch. He trained with his father, Lambert Sustris, who assisted in Titian's Venetian workshop. Sustris visited Rome in 1560, and lived in Florence from 1563 to 1567, where he was assisting Giorgio Vasari and joined the Accademia del Disegno. From Giorgio Vasari he inherited a palette of pale, broken colors. Sustris produced designs for tapestry weavers, stucco workers, goldsmiths, and sculptors, and organized a team of painters to decorate the palace interiors. Today, there are many pieces of art in different finishing options by the artist; many in the market include framed Friedrich Sustris art which can also be seen adorning the walls of some of the most prestigious galleries and museums all over the world.
