Gilbert Stuart (born in 1755) was born in Saunderstown, Rhode Island, and was baptized at Old Narragansett Church. Today, his works can be found in many art museums throughout Great Britain and the United States, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, D.C., the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the National Portrait Gallery in London. Stuart was the third son of Gilbert Stewart and Elizabeth Anthony Stewart. His father was a Scottish immigrant, while his mother was a member of a family from Middletown, Rhode Island. At the age of seven, Stuart moved to Newport, where his father worked in the merchant field. It was while in Newport that he first began to show great promise as a painter. His tutor was a Scottish painter called Alexander Cosmo. Under his tutor’s guidance, he painted the portrait Dr. Hunter's Spaniels, which became very famous and today hangs in the Hunter House Manison in Newport. He did this work when he was just twelve years old. In 1771, together with Alexander, Stuart moved to Scotland to finish his studies. Unfortunately, Alexander died in Edinburgh the following year. Stuart was left to fend for himself. He attempted briefly to earn a living as a painter without success, so in 1773 he decided to return to Newport. He never gave up, and in 1782, he received much acclaim for his portrait of William Grant. Since then, he produced many other pieces of artwork that were very successful. Today, framed Gilbert Stuart art adorn the walls of many buildings around the world.
