Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Mark Stock (1951 - 2013) was a realist figure painter, best known for a series on white gloves and butlers in tuxedos that suggested 1940s movie stills. According to the Alameda County coroner's office, Stock died of natural causes due to an enlarged heart. He was 62. At the time of his death, he was preparing for a major gallery show that was to take place at Modernism in San Francisco. He was a graduate of the University of South Florida in Tampa and had a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Stock graduated in 1976. After his graduation, Gemini G.E.L. hired him to work at as a lithographer in Los Angeles. This is where he printed for notable artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns before leaving to become a full time painter. It was in 1983 that Stock first painted the human and discovered his main theme after being walked out on by a woman in Los Angeles. The woman was his boss' daughter at the printing house. Mark remained completely original to himself, and there’s no school that he is part of being neither a Neo Geo nor a Cubist. That’s uniqueness is what made his art to be inspiring to many upcoming artists. His art also became so popular because of the same reason. Even today, framed Mark Stock art are being sold in large numbers. His art can be found in many galleries, museums, institutions and private homes all over the world. They are highly priced because they are in high demand.
