Frank Spear was born in 1906 in Walsall, England. He was born to Florence and Alfred James Spears who had his own company in Birmingham dealing in core stocks, Tin Men’s Gas Stoves, spray works and plaster oddsides. Alfred described himself as a General Metal Patternmaker. Frank went to grammar school and later trained in music, drama and art. He also studied architectural design at the Birmingham School of Art and later in London. In 1928, Frank immigrated to Cape Town, South Africa to work for Brimble and Briggs. This is where he met and married an outstanding poet and writer called Dorothea Botha. Botha’s works appeared frequently in publications in Cape Town including the Cape Times, the Cape Argus, and the Outspan. The couple opened their home to many friends who shared their interests. They were able influence many young people by introducing them to their love of painting, music, poetry, and drama. Frank and his group of painters in Cape Town would use watercolors to paint local scenes when they went out on Sundays. His works are found in several prestigious art galleries in South Africa and are owned by people all over the world. His style was impressionist and his paintings were of flowers, still life, religious subjects, portraits, clowns and kings, and music. His art work has been published as posters, greeting cards, and fine art prints. Framed Frank Spear art works have become so popular and are being sold by many galleries located across the globe.
