Michael Sowa (Born 1945) is an artist who was born in Germany. He is known mainly for his paintings which are variously stunning, surreal, or whimsical. Sowa’s paintings are titled in German and English and they often feature animals. He took seven years studying art at the Berlin State School of Fine Art. After his studies, he worked for some time as an art teacher then left to focus on his career as an illustrator and a painter. As a Surrealist, Sowa creates drawings and paintings that incorporate animals in humorous poses and fantastical elements. He also creates illustrations for books and magazines. Sowa creates paintings and drawings that make people laugh and smile, and his paintings rarely feature humans. He has also been the cover artist for several albums, including “Everybody’s Talkin’” and “The Beautiful South’s Miaow”. In 1996, Sowa released a book that highlights dozens of his favorite paintings. He’s the illustrator of Axel Hacke’s “A Bear Called Sunday,” “The Little King December” and Hans M. Enzensberger and Irene Dische’s book titled "Esterhazy, The Rabbit Prince." His works can be found on diverse products, including note cards, calendars, and posters. One of his outstanding pieces is the “Kranker Hund,” a painting that shows a dog with worry in its eyes and a collar wrapped around its neck. Sowa currently paints from his own studio and works as an illustrator for books and magazines in his native Germany. Many galleries sell his creative pieces, with a number of them availing framed Michael Sowa art works that are prepared ready for installation.
