Martin Smith Art

Martin Smith is currently a teacher in the department of photography at Griffith University and the Queensland College of Art, and he’s a doctoral candidate at Griffith University. His art has been exhibited internationally at Photo Paris, the Hong Kong Art Fair, Photo LA and Hous Projects in New York. While he was in Australia he exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart, and the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane. His work is held in the collections of the Museum of Old and New Art, the Queensland Art Gallery, Artbank and private collections in Australia, Hong Kong, Monash City Gallery, University of Queensland, Gadens Lawyers Brisbane and Sydney, University Art Museum, Art Museum in the United States and France. Smith has been awarded the Prometheus Award, the Veolia Prize, and many others due to his outstanding worrks. He grew up in Brisbane, Australia in the bayside suburbs. Smith had a speech impediment so his teenage years were spent observing and watching, as he was too embarrassed and shy to speak. His inability to speak so as to express himself left an ineradicable mark on his personal history and personality, and has provided the thrust for his artistic enquiries. His used his art to express himself and this worked so well. His art practice is primarily about language and the modes of representation used to interpret and express personal experiences and feelings.
