Artist Simón Silva (Born 1961) grew up in a farm-working family, with a tremendous lack of self-esteem. His family moved to the US when he was only one year old. His family settled in an agricultural town in California called Holtville in Imperial Valley. When he came of age, he spent much of his young life as a migrant farm worker. At a certain point, he realized his lifestyle wasn’t normal. He longed to start school on the very first day and to join sports teams and to have new clothes like other kids and to do something besides work on the weekends. However, he’d come back to school a week or two late because he was working the harvest, and he’d come back with purple hands. Even though there were other kids that came back with purple hands like him, it was always demoralizing. During his childhood, from the age of 8 on, he worked every weekend, every holiday, and every day of the summer doing fieldwork. Silva says this experience instilled in him the value of education and has as well inspired much of his artwork. He received an A.A. degree in Art from Imperial Valley College, and he received his BFA in Illustration from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Despite such a humble beginning, he has become a lecturer and has lectured at many grade schools, high schools and universities about the pride in one's self and culture and the importance of education. He has also done work for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, the Association of Mexican American Educators, the Bilingual Foundation for the Arts, and the Migrant Student Worker Program. Today, framed Simón Silva art hung in many prestigious galleries and museums across the US and beyond.
