Émile Signol (Born 1804) was a French artist who was known for his hostility towards Romanticism even though he lived in the Romantic period. He was mentored by Gros and Blondel who had great influence on his works. He painted genre works, portraits, and history paintings. With a style of his own, Signol’s works are able to speak for themselves, attracting clients not only from France, but also from around the world. He strived to make art that would inspire emotion in as many viewers as possible. His images have been published on posters, greeting cards calendars, and stationery. Growing up in France, he experienced a mixture of humor and a kind of life that made him get the "witty and gritty" style that he pours into his artwork. . In 1841, Signol was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor, and 24 years later, he was made an Officer. Four of his paintings are currently at the Saint-Sulpice church in Paris. He participated in many art exhibitions, and to improve the quality of his artwork he experimented with many mediums and techniques then chose the best for any particular work he had at hand. In 1840, Signol was commissioned to decorate the churches of Saint Augustin, Saint Eustace, Saint Roch, and Saint Sévérin. He did a lot of painting work and today framed Émile Signol art are owned by public and private collectors, galleries, and museums around the world. His pieces often incorporated elements from paintings that he admired. Many of his paintings were inspired by his fellow artists and the places he had visited during his numerous travels.
