J. Sharp (Born 1859 – Died 1953) was born in Bridgeport, Ohio. He was a painter and a founding member of the Taos Society of Artists. He was one of the first European-American artists to visit Taos, New Mexico, where he painted American Indian cultural life and portraits, as well as Western landscapes. His father was a merchant by trade. As a boy, Sharp loved swimming and one day he nearly drowned is a swimming accident. His friends pulled him out of the water and carried him home thinking he was dead. However, he was resuscitated by his mother but his ears had been damaged. He gradually became totally deaf and had to learn to read lips and carried a writing pad with him wherever he went. He lost his father when he was 12 years old. Soon after, Sharp began working in a factory to help support his family. Two years after his father’s death, he had to drop out of school due to his hearing problem and he moved to Cincinnati and lived with an aunt. Here he worked to support himself and also used to send money to his mother. Sharp studied, though briefly, at the McMicken School of Design, and later enrolled at the Cincinnati Art Academy. Sharp traveled to Europe, in 1881, where he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts for a year. This academy was in Antwerp, Belgium. In 1883, he returned to the U.S. and made the first of his journeys to the states of Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming and California. His work became popular very fast and even today, framed J. Sharp art is in great demand.
