Carlo Saraceni (1570 – 1620) was an Italian Baroque painter. In style, his paintings were more Roman even though he was born in Venice. This might have been because he moved to and lived in Rome for the majority of his major career. He studied at the Accademia di San Luca. His paintings were influenced at first by the densely forested landscape settings for human figures of Adam Elsheimer, the German painter. Adam had a small cabinet painting on copper, and this is the format that Carlo Saraceni employed in six landscape panels where he illustrated Mars and Venus and The Flight of Icarus. Saraceni never visited France but he spoke very fluent French and also had French followers and even a French wardrobe. He liked France and even some influence of France could be seen in his works. In 1606, Caravaggios piece the “Death of the Virgin” was rejected as an altarpiece for the Santa Maria della Scala chapel. It was Carlo Saraceni who supplied a substitute that was accepted – this substitute still remains there to date. Saraceni was influenced by Caravaggisti’s monumental figures, naturalistic detail, dramatic lighting, and momentary action so that he numbered among the first of the "Caravaggisti" or "tenebrists". This Saraceni’s style can be seen in the “Head of Holofernes” and the “Candlelit Judith”. In 1616, Saraceni collaborated on the frescoes of the Palazzo del Quirinale. He is said to have been influential for Pensionante del Saraceni, a still life painter in Rome. In 1620, Saraceni returned to Venice where he died in the same year. Interestingly, his creative works have lived to date and laminated, canvas, and framed Carlo Saraceni art pieces are widely distributed globally. They can be found in galleries, private and corporate collections as well as art dealerships.
