Scott Sandell (born 1953) is an expressionist artist. For many years his work focused on the idea of making beautiful objects. Sandell was very much influenced by Japanese printmaking and the fact he lived near the ocean and spent a lot of time on it. He uses traditional printmaking techniques and tools; he combines images with abstraction from his daily experience. He combines mixed media in his vibrant painted prints, employing lithographic printing techniques, woodblock, intaglio, photography, oil and acrylic paint. In 1992 his work went through a technical and philosophical change. He focused on the concept of the work as documentation, much like a photograph, or as a page in a journal which later sparks a memory. The documentation may be of an idea, an event, the light at a particular time, an experience, or it may simply document how red looked next to blue last Friday. His images are included in prestigious public collections including Prudential Insurance, The Walker Art Center, The Library of Congress, Sperry Univac, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Harvard University, Chrysler Museum, Chemical Bank, and Time Life/Warner. Since 1977, Sandell's work has appeared in group and solo exhibitions throughout the United States including Christie's Contemporary Art, The Chicago Center for the Print, The Hudson River Museum, C.G. Rein Gallery, and Frick Art Museum. These exhibitions have made his art to be known all over the world, and explain why framed Scott Sandell art are found in almost all corners of the world. In his work Sandell joins a more advanced photographic transfer procedure with traditional lithographic, intaglio and woodblock methods.
