Luis Sanchez (Born 1968) is best known for his realistic paintings of beautiful people set in surreal circumstances. His Cuban-born father was also an artist. His usually large works leave the viewers with the impression that he has used collage, photography, or other techniques, when in the actual sense he only dexterously uses the brush. In 1979, the Sanchez family immigrated to the United States. Sanchez attended Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle after graduating from high school in 1987. But after a lifetime of chronic kidney disease and years of dialysis, he was forced to drop out of school in 1993 to receive a kidney transplant. Unable to return to school after the transplant, Sanchez began painting from his bed and focused on refining his drawing techniques. He learned the subtleties of human anatomy through books, sometimes sketching for up to 12 hours a day. Sanchez says his transplant was a rebirth. He adds that it is difficult to explain, but it certainly put everything, life, and everyone in it, in crystal clear perspective. The first major exhibit of his paintings in 1993 resulted in three consecutive sold-out shows. Since then, he has exhibited almost continuously, with shows in New York, Seattle, Florida, London, Indianapolis, and throughout Los Angeles, where he now resides. His work emanates the discipline, energy, and drive of someone who has been given a second chance in life, and now lives life to the fullest. Due to his hard work and the quality of his paintings, framed Luis Sanchez art are now much sought after by many collectors.
