Jack Roth was born in Brockaway, Pennsylvania. He was an American painter who developed a style as a Color Field Painter and as an Abstract Expressionist. He joined Pennsylvania State University but World War II interrupted his studies as he had to serve in the air force and army. He resumed his studies in 1949 at the California School of Fine Arts. He studied under Elmer Bischoff, Richard Diebenkorn, Clifford Still, and Mark Rothko. Afterwards he went to Pennsylvania State where he completed his B.A. in Chemistry. He continued with his studies and received an M.A. from the State University of Iowa in 1952. Jack Roth obtained his doctoral degree in mathematics1962 from Duke University. His paintings typically reflect a meeting point between a precise understanding of the nuances of form and spontaneity and also feature vivid geometric shapes. He participated in the “Younger American Painter” show in 1954 and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NY, along with Robert Motherwell, William de Kooning and Jackson Pollock. In 1963 He also exhibited at MoMA, and several of his works were purchased by MoMA for its permanent collections. At the same time, Jack Roth framed art can also be found in art dealerships and are in most cases made ready for purchase and installation. He taught at the University of Southern Florida, and the University of Kentucky, Lexington, before he relocated to Montclair, NJ, where he became the chairman of the mathematics department at Upsala College, NJ. Jack Roth 1971 began teaching both advanced painting and mathematics at Ramapo College, Mahwah, NJ. In 1977, he was awarded the First Thomases Faculty Award for Outstanding Contributions to the college.
