Joe Rosenthal (9th October, 1911 – 20th August, 2006) was a printmaker, sculptor, painter, graphic artist and illustrator. He was born in Kishinev, Romania. His interest in photography started as a hobby during the Great Depression. Since 1927, his home was Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Rosenthal is best known for his tabletop and outdoor bronze sculptures of rotund figures. He also worked in several other mediums and styles in a career that spanned seven decades. He graduated from McKinley High School in 1929, worked as an office boy for some time then moved to San Francisco where he got a job with San Francisco News as a reporter-photographer. In 1941, Rosenthal attended the University of San Francisco and later joined the staff of Associated Press (AP). He was rejected by the U.S. Army as a photographer due to his poor sight. In 1943, he joined the U.S. Maritime Service as a photographer and served as a warrant officer. His duty was to document the life aboard ship in North Africa and British Isles. The other mediums he used included pen and ink, acrylic, posters, lithography, woodblock print, watercolor, oil and mixed mediums. His subjects also varied. They included portraits, social commentary, allegory, genre, figures, and nudes. His styles were Realism, Fauvism and Expressionism. Rosenthal was awarded recognition by the Toronto Outdoor Exhibition, the Canada Council and the Art Gallery Ontario.
