S Rodriguez was born and raised in San Jose, California but is of Mexican descent. Living in California is great to him because there are so many cultures that inspire him. When he was a kid, his uncles were Disk Jockeys and had they a big record collection, so he was exposed to many album cover illustrations. He was also inspired to draw by Looney Toons. However, he didn’t get serious about it until age 11 when he started doing graffiti. Rodriguez believes this is what made him want to stick to doing art, and also allowed him to escape the negativity that was going on all around him. He’s been fortunate to have his work shown in public and private art spaces, companies, museums, internet, galleries, and editorial publications. He makes topographical Portraits by stylizing a portrait with shapes and topographical lines in a similar manner to those found in the images on geographic maps. In the early days, he spent a lot of time tagging. He was drawn to this form because it’s all he knew about graffiti at the time and, he says, it was easily accessible. He could ride buses or walk all day getting his name up. He says it was like a game and a kind of social network that recognized him for his personal touch. Today, framed S Rodriguez art adorn the walls of many buildings around the world. Many people like them because they come ready to hang. He feels lucky to have studied as an artist in a college after studying in the streets.
