Alastair Reynolds (Born in 1966) was born in Barry, South Wales. He loved science and was a writer and an artist. Like many writers, Reynolds wasn’t a particularly a healthy child. He began to suffer from severe asthma from the age of five, and this had two effects: one, it made him extremely uninterested in sports, and even today, he’s not very coordinated when it comes to things like telling left from right, throwing and catching balls, and so on. Two, this resulted in him spending a lot of time out of school. He spent quite a bit of time in hospitals, usually on a drip, and often in an oxygen tent, with some long hours between visits. Because he didn’t have much to do, and as is so often the case, these lonely times made him bookish and he became fairly satisfied with his own company. Reynolds often looks back and wonders if he owes his writing to asthma. 40 years later, he still lives with asthma on almost a daily basis (in case he neglects to take his medication, he starts feeling unwell within a week or so). However, it’s been years since he had a really serious attack, and he thinks he knows enough about the disease to be able to manage it comfortably. He lives with the disease but he no longer feels defined or limited by it. In fact he took up running in his 20s, primarily as a way of coping asthma. At school, he was only good at two things– writing and drawing, and that’s what he does to date. Framed Alastair Reynolds art have found their way into many galleries spread all over the world.
