Anne Pratt (1806 – 1893) was born and raised in Strood, Kent. She was the second of 3 daughters of Robert Pratt who was a grocer, and Bundock Sara. Ann was a self-taught artist and an author. She wrote more than 20 books. Some of her selected works include among others Flowers and their associations, The Field, the Garden, and the Woodland, The Ferns of Great Britain, The Flowering Plants, Sedges, Grasses, and The Pictorial Catechism of Botany, Wild Flowers, Poisonous, Noxious, and Suspected Plants. From her first book, her work sold well, but she never achieved much appreciation. This is attributed to prejudice against her just because she was self-taught. Ann was an ornithological and botanical illustrator. She was one of the best known botanical illustrators of the Victorian age in England. She illustrated the books with chromolithographs and she worked in collaboration with an engraver William Dickes, who was skilled in the chromolithograph process. As a child, Ann was sickly and would be seen sitting and drawing while her sisters played out in the field. It was at this time that a family friend, Dr. Dods, introduced her to botany and her elder sister supported her and fostered her interest by helping her in collecting plants. Ann fell in love with botany and she educated at Eastgate House, Rochester. Later on, she decided to move to London (Brixton), where she developed her career as an illustrator. Currently, framed Anne Pratt art are very popular among botanists and scientists who love art.
