J. Alex Potter (Born 1945) determined at a young age that she wanted to be an artist. She went ahead to Virginia Common Wealth University where she earned a BFA in sculpture and printmaking. Joan has won several national and regional awards. She loves the directness and physicality of pastels and says that the process is almost alchemical. Her pastels are included in the book “Best of Pastels” and are featured in magazines that include Pastel Artist International, The Artist's Magazine, American Artist, Focus Santa Fe, and Southwest Art. She says that the pastels come from the ground in the form of pure pigment, and then they metamorphose once they get to the surface; and she gets to touch them in her hand. Joan was honored as a Master Pastelllist by the Kansas Pastel Society. She’s a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and the Knickbocker Artists, USA. She was the winner of National Endowment/Mid-America Arts Alliance for the Arts Grant and Kansa Arts Commission Developmental Grant. Today, Joan resides in rural Hutchinsn, Kansas. The artist exercises careful control to ensure command in value, in dark and light - which to her is the most important thing in painting. She therefore produces very attractive art, and that explains why framed J. Alex Potter art. Her art is found in many prestigious galleries around the world and are also in many collections. She has exhibited at Patricia Carlisle Fine Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Carol Henderson Gallery, Fort Worth, American Legacy Gallery, Kansas City,
