He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Art Students League in New York. He studied with leading artists of the time, including Henry McCarter, Hugh Breckenridge and Carlson F. John. Beginning early 1920s, he divided his time between the art colonies of Florida (St. Augustine), where he maintained a studio in Provincetown, Massachusetts and in the Studio Building on Aviles Street.
