Peggy Olsen (born 1937) was born in New York. She has been a member of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom for a very long time. She like to march in peace demonstrations and can be found holding anti-war signs, most Sunday afternoons, at Window on the Bay park in Monterey. Peggy didn’t start painting until she was above 40 years of age, when she enrolled in a batik class. She’d always been drawn to art, but resisted the urge believing that she was meant to do other things. She didn’t think she had any artistic talent, but now she knows that talent is a portion of success - being persistent and confidence count, too. Actually she was persistent and that first batik class just awakened the sleeping giant of an artist in her. She took painting and drawing at the Carmel Adult School and MPC, studying with Keith Lindberg and Reed Farrington among others. She started in figurative work, but quickly moved to the local landscape painting which she’s now known for. When Peggy decided to give up her career in social work so as to get time to paint fulltime, she first started by delivering newspapers for 5 years to help pay the bills. She did this from door to door and was lucky her husband is a teacher and was willing to support her. She’s now counted among the top artists in the world. In fact, framed Peggy Olsen art have become a common feature in many homes.
