Born in Austin, Texas, Michael Ochs (Born 1943) is a photographic archivist best known for his extensive collection of pictures dating back to the 1950s and 1960s. He began collecting photographs as a hobby, and would allow his friends, including Dave Marsh and Lester Bangs, both rock critics, to use the pictures for free to illustrate their articles. His Archive is located in Los Angeles and is called The “Michael Ochs Archive.” It contains over 3 million proof sheets, vintage prints, and negatives which are licensed daily for use in books, CD reissues, documentaries and films. This collector began to take a more professional approach after the Los Angeles Free Press attributed one of their photos to the "Michael Ochs Archives” and Clark Dick sent him an unexpected check for $1,000 after he used some of his (Ochs's) pictures on a TV special. Ochs grew up in New York and Ohio. He attended The Ohio State University and Adelphi University. After his graduation, he served as manager to his brother, Phil Ochs who was a singer-songwriter, from 1967 until 1976 when his brother committed suicide. He was recommended to the Redbook magazine by and actress because he was known as an expert in using low-light conditions and no flash for his usual work photographing sports, war and politics. Ochs has shot continuously and has produced his art in a variety of finishing options including framed Michael Ochs art. The photographer also led the publicity departments at ABC Records and Columbia Records.
