Nik Wheeler / Danita Delimont Art

Nik Wheeler is a professional photographer based in Santa Barbara. He began his career in Vietnam as a combat photographer for United Press International. He covered major battles such as the Battle of Hue and the Tet Offensive. Wheeler was based in Saigon for two and a half years after which he moved to Beirut to freelance throughout the Middle East, where, for Newsweek, he covered the Yom Kippur War and for Time Magazine he covered the Jordan Civil war, and also did some assignments for Telegraph Magazines, National Geographic and the London Sunday Observer. In the mid-1970s Wheeler relocated to Paris where he worked with Sipa Press under contract and traveled the world covering major international events including the Fall of Saigon, General Francoâ’s Funeral, the Montreal Olympics, the Coronation of King of Nepal, and the Thrilla in Manilaâ. It was during this period that at one point when he was at Algiers airport he took the picture of Carlos the Jackal. Jackal was an arch-terrorist and this photo became very famous and was accredited as one of the most important Photos of the twentieth century. Wheeler settled in Los Angeles in the late 1970s and worked on several books. His first book titled “Return to the Marshesâ” was published by Collins. It he shot it in the Marshes of Southern Iraq and it was an expansion of a National Geographic assignment. Today framed Nik Wheeler art are in great demand.
