Thomas Moran (Born 1837) was born in Bolton, Lancashire in a family of handloom weavers. The nineteenth century rapid industrialization of England mechanized the weaving process and this forced his parents out of their jobs. At this point the whole family moved just outside of Philadelphia to Kensington, Philadelphia. At sixteen years of age, he became an apprentice to Scattergood & Telfer, a Philadelphia wood engraving firm. This is where he began to draw and paint seriously, working meticulously on his skills as both an illustrator and a watercolorist. In this, Moran had support and help from Edward, his brother who was an associate of the marine painter Hamilton James. In 1883, he traveled to Mexico and in later years, he went back to the Grand Canyon. Moran traveled more extensively in New Mexico and Arizona, and produced a number of outstanding works of the pueblos at Laguna and Acoma. Early in the 1860, Moran had traveled to Lake Superior. This is where he sketched and painted the landscape of the Great Lakes. When he came back to Philadelphia, he sold the paintings of the Great Lakes and then set off on another trip to London, just to see the artwork of JMW Turner, the celebrated British marine and landscape painter. His artwork attracts many viewers today, especially the upcoming artists who look at them as a source of inspiration. The framed Thomas Moran art have high price tags on them. His reputation established very fast and the artist continued to travel widely during his lifetime.
