John Miller (1931 - 2002) was born in London. He became famous because of his paintings of the Cornish landscape. His career spanned 40 years during which time he mainly painted the beach scenes of his home county of Cornwall, especially the Penwith peninsula and Tresco. Miller emerged as a cultural figurehead within Cornwall during the 1970s. He became so popular that he was given the responsibility of being in charge of some high profile architectural projects such as the reordering of the interior of Newlyn Art Gallery. He also worked as an art teacher, a patron of local charities, and a TV personality. Miller was an active supporter of the Church of England. In 1961, he was elected to become a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists. His work continues to have an extremely high public profile, both in the United Kingdom and internationally. In 2003, he was listed alongside L.S. Lowly and Monet among the top 4 best-selling landscape artists. He also came above renowned artists such as Picasso, Matisse and Van Gogh in a list of the current top 10 best-selling deceased artists in all genres. Between 2004 and 2005, he became the subject of academic investigation by a postgraduate student at the University of Kent. Miller died in 2002 and 10 years later, the New Craftsman Gallery St Ives presented a celebratory exhibition of his work to mark a decade since his death. Framed John Miller art are found in many galleries and institutions throughout the world.
