Gerald Merfeld (Born 1936) studied painting with William Mosby in Chicago after which he became a Studio assistant to Dean Cornwell who was a mural painter. Merfeld began his career in the commercial art department of Chicago’s American Academy of Art, IL. However, since the work here was repetitive and boring, he got fed up and changed to panting classes. The 3 years that followed saw him studying fine art. He latter learned that Dean Cornwell was looking for an apprentice and he sent his application. Merfeld waited for long and never received any response, so he decided to call Dean Cornwell directly and luckily he was accepted. So in 1957 Merfeld went to New York where he assisted Cornwell in his large studio atop Grand Central Station. His duty included transferring Cornwell’s cartoon drawings to canvas by means of glass slides and lantern projection. Merfeld worked here for three years. The strong philosophies and colorful lifestyle adopted by illustrators such as Mead Schaeffer, Rico Tomoso, John Gannam, Walter Biggs and James Montgomery Flogg shaped Merfeld’s art and saw him embark on his own career path, first in New England and later in New Lenox, IL. Framed Gerald Merfeld art can today be found in all corners of the world. His art is in permanent collections of Museum of Contemporary Impressionism, Marietta College, The Walter Gray/Dan Blanchard Collection, U.S. Navy Archives, John Deere & Company, and John J. McDonough Collection of American Art. He has received many awards including Louis E. Seley Gold Medal, American Artist Professional League, Washington Square Exhibit, Oklahoma Museum of Art Award, 1980 Hope Show, Butler Institute of American Art Award, among others.
