Born on the French Riviera, Achille Lucien Mauzan (born 1883) moved to Italy in 1905. He was a decorative illustrator who designed during the Art Deco movement. He also did painting and sculpturing. He studied in the École des Beaux-Arts at Lyon, France. Mauzan produced more than two thousand during the course of his prodigious and long career. His art was much influenced by the culture and life in France where he was born. He began his life as an illustrator in 1909 in Italy where he was working for Ricordi and other first-rate printing firms. He worked in Italy until 1927 when he and his wife were invited to Buenos Aires. While in Buenos Aires, he continued with a frenetic pace of poster production, doing his best on each piece of art. In 1933, he and his wife returned to France, where he continued with his work the rest of his life. Mauzan’s limitless imagination was a landscape of incongruous associations and ingenious concepts that are working in harmony. What marked his designs as unique was his sense of humor. He laid on color freely and simply, and his paintings turned out to be grotesque, witty, mad, charming, pungent, and openly affectionate. This is just one of the reasons why his art was and is still popular. Mauzan is also noted for the several war posters that he designed including an adaptation of the famous poster of Lord Kitchener. Today, many collectors avail his work as framed Achille Lucien Mauzan art.
