Vittorio Maria (Born 1692 – died 1776) was a stuccoist and an Italian painter of the late-Baroque. He was a pupil of Antonio Dardani in his native Bologna where he was active. Maria was largely self-taught but he was gifted with exceptional talent. He had such qualities that are praiseworthy, but these qualities were definitely not as a result of his long toil but they were pure gifts with which he was endowed. Such an attribute enabled him to secure a position among the Bologna’s most highly reputed artists in of his time. In fact, he was chosen four times to be the director of the Accademia Clementina of Bologna. Maria began his career as a stuccoist, but being impressed by the art of Marcantonio Chiarini, the quadraturista, he began to specialize in the study of perspective. He saw Marcantonio’s large perspective paintings while he was working at the Palazzo Almandini. He studied the civil architecture of Ferdinando Galli Bibiena and soon became an expert in this art benefiting also from his experience as an assistant to Carl Antonio Buffagnotti who was a scenery designer. He also began to assist Stefano Orlandi who was an established quadratura specialist. Maria did several remarkable works, including the painting of the Basilica of San Domenico in Bologna, the church of the Madonna della Guardia, the gallery of the Ranuzzi Palace in Bologna, and the Madonna del Soccorso, among others. Two paintings by him are included in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna. His art was and is also availed as framed Vittorio Maria art. He developed his talents as a figure painter and became a stylist of unparalleled elegance.
