Bill Makinson’s paintings feature in corporate, private and national collections all over the world from Hawaii to Australia and Alaska to Hong Kong. His exhibitions have been from Wilmslow to Henley. He hopes to continue to carry on painting while ever he enjoys it and one day to write books. He also hopes to one day be in a position to help new artists without any formal art education and this would incorporate digital photographs that he takes daily of the progress of his work, with simple explanations. Although he had no formal training, it was obvious at school that he had a gift for art and crafts. Makinson was happy doing his work which involved bookbinding with artistic gold leaf lettering that he embossed on the spine and cover, but he was thrilled when it was the art lesson and always attempted more adventurous subjects. From the very beginning he found there was no alternative from painting on site. His very first scenes were mostly townscapes; he remembers crowds of people standing and watching him for hours as he painted. Shadows and perspectives, solid buildings with color he could manage, but people who were walking by were difficult to draw since he had to draw them in just the few seconds they were in view and add their clothing color. He was avoiding trees, so his next learning process was to spend every day in Sherwood Forest. He remembers strapping his easel on his back and trudging off into the woods. Nowadays his work is far more detailed, and may even take weeks/months to complete – especially the framed Bill Makinson art.
