W.H. Lizars (Born 1788) was born in Edinburgh to Daniel Lizars who was a renowned copperplate engraver and printer. His artistic talent was noticed at a very early age and he was encouraged by his father and by the many people who saw his work to pursue art as a career. He became a very experienced artist and in her work, he was able to produce high quality pieces of art. His pieces of art are found in many collections and in museums, galleries, homes and institutions. The images have been published in brochures, textbooks, calendars, magazines, and guidebooks. He was first apprenticed to his father and after that he joined the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh where he studied under John Graham. A background of extensive travel helped him to attract a network of loyal fans from many countries. In 1812, Lizars's father died and this forced him to ditch painting. Still, in order to support his mother and family, he was forced to take over the family’s engraving and printing business. He also liked to travel a lot, and these travels became his greatest source of inspiration. The framed W.H. Lizars art became very popular – they are popular to date. This is because they come ready to hang and in very attractive frames. His art was warmly received by viewers and critics alike. Two of his pictures were sent to the Royal Academy in London, and were received very well. Lizars contributed so much to the growing number of publications that catered for the Scottish tourist trade.
