Frederic Leighton, 1st Baron Leighton PRA (3 December 1830 – 25 January 1896), famously referred to as Sir Frederic Leighton after his 48th birthday, was a famous English artist who specialized in painting and sculpting. His subjects were drawn from history, the Bible, and classical subjects. Leighton studied at the University College School in London. After completing his college studies, he further got trained within Europe by Giovanni Costa and Eduard von Steinle. At the age of 24, while he was staying in Florence, he attended Accademia di Belle Arti. Leighton later moved to Paris where he interacted with other artists such as Corot, Ingres, Millet, and Delacroix. He later went back to London where, in 1864, he became a Royal Academy associate and eventually the academy's president between 1878 and 1896 when he died. Leighton earned his Peerage in 1896, becoming the first ever painter to earn the honor. Sadly though, he passed on the following day.
Leighton’s house at Holland Park, London, has since been transformed into a museum, Leighton House Museum. Many of his art pieces are preserved in the museum. The other art pieces in the museum are Leighton’s collection of art by other artists. One of his most fabled pieces is the Flaming June, which depicted a woman having a catnap on a couch. Leighton became part of different movements, including academicism, neoclassicism, and British Aestheticism. His artistic career wasn't without awards, earning Legion d'honneur and Prix de Rome. Besides Leighton House Museum, his art is also available in other collections in different parts of the globe. Frederic Leighton framed art are also found in galleries, ready to be added to decorations.
