Artist Bernardino Lanino (Born 1512) first studied under a local artist in his hometown of Vercelli where he was born and brought up. He began working with the Vercelli’s most important painter in 1530 and three years later he reached the rank of master. In the mid 1500s Lanino traveled to Milan multiple times to produce frescoes and altarpieces. While in Milan, Leonardo da Vinci’s chiaroscuro technique had a profound influence on his drawings. From 1560 to 1570, his paintings became increasingly popular and his workshop had a startling output. The most popular pieces of his art were the ready to hang framed Bernardino Lanino art. During this period he made many of his finest drawings, creating startling art that reflected chiaroscuro effects using white bodycolor and black chalk heightening on brown prepared paper. Lanino often used pen and wash with white highlights in his accomplished compositional studies. Examples of his soft style spread throughout Milan and the eastern Piedmont, and his sons also became painters in Vercelli. Patrons eagerly sought Lanino's paintings throughout the 1560s and 1570s, and his workshop was amazingly prolific. Lanino became Vercelli’s leading painter after his teacher left to establish himself in Milan. He was a gifted artist and it was therefore no surprise that his art became popular very fast. Currently, his art adorn the walls of many art galleries, museums, institutions and even private homes. He participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions that helped to expose his art to thousands of people including notable collectors.
