Jérôme-Martin Langlois (1830 - 1838) was born in Paris, France. At a young age, he was influenced by his father who was a miniature painter. His father never wanted him to take art as a career but he persisted. He went ahead and trained with Jacques-Louis David, who was then a leading painter in France. Langlois was very keen to detail. He could exaggerate small things in large sizes that turned what were often times easily looked over or unnoticed into beautiful compositions full of life and color. He was so much influenced by the Neoclassical style practiced by David whose mythological and historical paintings were characterized by polished, cool rendering of form and severe settings. Ultimately Langlois became one of David's favorite students and he assisted David on several of his art. Beginning in 1805 Langlois exhibited at the Salon regularly, winning second prize and first prize in 1817 and in 1819 respectively. In 1805 Langlois scooped the 2nd position in the Prix de Rome competition of that year. In 1809 he won the top prize, earning himself study in Rome in the 1810s. In 1824 Langlois traveled to Brussels to paint a portrait of the David who was exiled there. Shortly after he painted his portrait, David died. Langlois had a huge following because of the high quality of art he was producing. Even today, many collectors like to stock a large number of framed Jérôme-Martin Langlois art because they are in high demand. Langlois was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts just shortly before his death.
