Mary Kay Krell grew up in a university town of Ann Arbor in Michigan. She loved art from a young age and when she joined the University of Michigan School of Architecture and Design, she majored in painting and printmaking. She learned graphic skills at the university and has held several positions as a graphic artist. She started her work by using acrylics and pen and ink but after she moved to Minnesota in 1985, she began painting in watercolor and 8 years later she began experimenting with oils. Mary’s style is characterized by meticulous preoccupation with texture and color. Her subject matter is botanical; either still life with flowers or nursery and garden scenes, with special attention given to the color and structure balance of the piece. She has won awards in several regional art groups including the Society of Watercolor Artists of Ft. Worth, the Southwest Watercolor Society, and the Mid-Cities Trinity Arts Guild. Mary regularly exhibits with watercolor societies. She has also won awards in graphic design for university publications. Her work has been published as calendars, prints, and greeting cards. In1994 and 1995, Mary won merchandise awards in the Society of Watercolor Artists of Ft. Worth juried shows. She won Best of Show in the 1997 Annual Exhibition and has been an active member of the Southwest Watercolor Society. The popularity of ready to hang framed Mary Kay Krell art is increasing by the day. Mary now lives in Texas and her originals grace of collectors from New York to California.
