Yanagisawa Kien (Born 1704) was born in Edo at the residence of Kofu Domain. His real given name was Satotomo. Just like many painters of the time, Kien began by studying as a child under a Kanô school painter. However, at one time he angrily moved out of his master's atelier, and terminated the relationship. He claimed that modern methods of painting were too stultified. Kien decided to take two ancient Chinese masters, Zhang Sengyou and Wu Daozi as his teachers. These two masters painted with such enthusiasm that the dragons they painted literally flew off the page. He was so much dedicated to his work that after a short while he came to the limelight, and in 1738 he began teaching art. Some of his students included Machi and Ike no Taiga; who became one of the most famous literati painters of all Edo period. Machi was a young girl whose mother's teashop the artist liked to frequent. Machi ended up being a prominent painter in her own right; she was using the name Ike Gyokuran.
