J. G. Keuleman (Born 1842) was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He loved art so much from his childhood and he knew he would become an artist. He became a bird illustrator who provided illustrations regularly for The Proceedings of the Zoological Society and The Ibis. His art is characterized by its consistency. His work showed little change over the course of his career and life, and focused to a great extent on the rendering of fine detail. Quite a number of critics have placed him above his contemporaries; and it is true to say that his ability to create vivid and accurate representations of birds gave him a distinction in his field. He’s known for Natural history illustration. He illustrated a large number of the best-known books of ornithology of the 19th century. He also illustrated many important ornithology books, including Monograph of the Bucerotidae, Monograph of the Turdidae, A History of the Birds of New Zealand, History of the Birds of Ceylon, Biologia Centrali-Americana, History of the Birds of Europe, and The Journal of the Linnean Society, to name jut a few. The artist was prodigious in his output. Many clients commissioned him to paint pictures of birds for them, and this happened extensively throughout his career. Keuleman’s prints were published continuously for 44 years, from 1867 to 1911. His art is today availed mainly as framed J. G. Keuleman art which come ready to hang. His art is also available in many online stores. Most of his illustrations were produced through traditional lithography.
