Arthur Hughes (Born 1832 – Died 1915) was born in London. He studied at the art school at Somerset House and later entered the Royal Academy schools. His first master at the art school at Somerset House was Alfred Stevens. At the Royal Academy schools, he met Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, and became one of the Pre-Raphaelite group of painters. He became an illustrator and painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His first picture was hung at the Royal Academy when he was only 17. The picture was titled Musidora. From then onwards, he used to contribute almost annually to the Royal Academy and later also to the New Gallery and Grosvenor exhibitions. Hughes is the one who painted Ophelia which illustrated Keats's poem “The Eve of St. Agnes” and is housed at Toledo Museum of Art. His version of the former is in the form of a secular triptych. His works are noted for their delicate draughtsmanship and magical, glowing coloring. They are mainly distributed as framed Arthur Hughes art, though there are also other finishing options the clients can choose. In 1855 he married Foord Tryphena, his model for April Love. His beautiful oil portrait features his wife Tryphena. It is titled Springtide and was first exhibited in Dublin in 1855. His other popular paintings are The Long Engagement and April Love, both of which depict troubled couples mulling over the temporal nature of beauty and love. The artist was in close contact with George MacDonald and illustrated some of his books. He also produced several illustrations for Good Words, the Norman MacLeod's monthly magazine.
