Manuel Hughes holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s of Fine Arts degree both from the University of Missouri. His work is represented in New York by O.K. Harris and Hubert Gallery and in Ohio by Hammond Harkins Gallery. The Chase Manhattan Bank, the Everson Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, High Museum, the Newark Museum, the Studio Museum of Harlem, and St. Louis Museum are just a few of the many private collections that feature works by this artist who’s known internationally. His works are also in many public collections. Hughes has focused on painting household objects for over 30 years. The artist moves from Paris to France to New York City looking for thrift shops and antique stores in search of toys, tins and old crates to use as subjects of his highly detailed and colorful still lifes. He has several years of experience in the arts industry having been active in the art scene since the early seventies. Just recently, he embarked on producing a series called “Arkansas Memories.” These pieces incorporate memories of his childhood. They are still life paintings with historical African-American objects representing the disturbing, sometimes vast, often gorgeous images of both present and past life as an African-American man in America. Hughes works on anything he feels the viewers can associate with - from boxes, antique cans to draped fabrics, instruments, and toys, his simple portrayal of routine and usual items set against an ordinary background invites the viewer to share in the pleasure he takes in each unique and quirky form. Framed Manuel Hughes art are sold through many outlets.
