Hans Holbein the Younger (c. 1497 – between 7 October and 29 November 1543) was a German artist who specialized in painting, having learned from his father. He's regarded among the leading portraitists ever, particularly for his Henry VIII portrait. Holbein created more than 150 artwork pieces in both small and life sizes. Because of his father's influence, he started painting early, joining his father during works that involved painting murals. After his brother Ambrosius’ death in Basel, Switzerland, he ran his busy workshop, created mural and altarpiece designs, and illustrated numerous books. Holbein also created designs of stained glass windows and created portraits. In 1526, he moved to London because life got a bit tough for him. In London, he created several works at the court of Henry VIII where he created numerous portraits. In later years, Holbein worked in both London and Basel, creating portraits of different subjects. His works of art were highly detailed and were done using pencil and often enriched using colored chalk and ink. He preferred to draw the upper part of the body without hands. After creating his outlines, he would then transfer the work to a support base and paint it using powdered charcoal. Holbein also used carbon paper in later years to get his paintings done. He also created a number of art miniatures from skills he acquired from Lucas Horenbout, who was a Flemish illuminator, another artist who also worked for Henry's court. To date, he remains a respected artist whose portraits have been described in some quarters as the best ever. For those who would like framed Hans Holbein the Younger art ready to be mounted on the wall, many galleries and art dealerships avail them.
