Ginny Hogan is a self-taught artist who lives and works from his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico which also doubles as his studio. His initial images were inspired by cave and rock art, pecking and paintings called petroglyphs and pictographs that were made by native peoples all over the world. These paintings are believed to have been used for shamanic rituals involving hunting, healing, fertility and protection. Hogan feels a powerful connection to the people who made these paintings and the spirits that inspired them, and he has traveled extensively photographing them. These works are primarily southwest in nature including bison, horses and desert landscapes reflecting the vivacious red, turquoise and orange hues so prevalent in Mexico. In 1988 Hogan attended Colorado State University and learned the ancient art of papermaking. His handmade pieces of paper are formed from the cellulose fibers of plants. The pulp he uses is 100 percent cotton rag. This, he pours onto a screen then presses it with a sponge to form sheets. He waits for it to dry and then he wrinkles the sheets, rips the edges and coats them with layers of acrylic paint to create an aged effect. This produces a perfect “canvas” ready for a painting. More recently Hogan has started collaging bits and strips of the handmade paper onto canvas to create a sparkling texture that reflect light much like water reflects the sun. He produces art in a variety of finishing options to increase their collectability - the most popular being ready to hang framed Ginny Hogan art.
